Cacao Tea is loose leaf chocolate tea made from 100% cacao husk. Cacao husks are the outer shells of the cacao bean.
During the chocolate making process, cacao beans are harvested, fermented and dried before being roasted. Each step of this process plays an important part in developing the unique chocolate flavour characteristics of the cacao. The beans are then cracked in a winnower to separate the nibs from the husks. The nibs go on to make chocolate, and you are left with the husks - an otherwise discarded waste product which, when steeped in hot water makes a lovely chocolate tisane (herbal tea).
The loose leaf cacao husk brews just like tea and the longer you steep it, the stronger the flavour develops. It has a delicate chocolatey aroma and provides a unique chocolate experience. If you can imagine enjoying the taste of a good quality piece of dark chocolate, at the same time as experiencing the soothing warmth of a cup of tea; then you've got yourself cacao tea.
Depending on where the husk is from, there's subtle variation in the taste and aroma of the brew. Each single origin husk taking on its own unique flavour profile.
Given the husks absorb many of the nutrients from the beans themselves, cacao tea packs some nutritional punch containing many similar health properties. Cacao is one of the highest plant-based sources of magnesium and the chocolate tea is rich in antioxidants and other vitamins.
But let's not forget its mood-boosting efforts, containing Theobromine which is a natural stimulant with a gentle slow-release effect to give you that little pick-me-up without the harsh crash you get from caffeine; and 'Bliss Chemical' Anandamide which is released when we are feeling great.
The good thing about cacao tea is supporting sustainable and ethical practices which, for us is important that the people and environment that produce it are looked after. All of our cacao teas are have been ethically sourced from suppliers trading directly with cacao farmers to ensure the highest quality cacao, and also cutting out the middle man so the growers are paid beyond fair trade prices. This not only improves their livelihood, but also enables them to continue investing in higher quality equipment resulting in the best quality cacao.
We take pride in providing an end product that you can trust is good for you so we source only organically farmed and where possible, certified organic cacao. The tea is 100% natural with no artificial additives or flavours, just pure husk.
For the perfect brew, we recommend steeping 2 teaspoons of loose leaf tea in a cup of boiling water for at least 5-7 minutes (or longer if you like a stronger brew). It can be enjoyed black or with your milk of choice. Adding in a pinch of coconut sugar or sweetener will bring out the true chocolate flavour.
Not only can the tea be enjoyed in the traditional sense, the brew is delicious iced and extremely versatile in the kitchen. You can add it to your morning smoothies, infuse milk to make deserts, turn it into a 'milo-like' sprinkle, the list goes on.
So now you can see what all the fuss is about with this coffee alternative, tea that tastes like chocolate, packed with health benefits brew. Have all your Christmases come at once? Yep, they sure have. So go on, treat yourself with some choccie tea. You deserve it!
