Cacao Tahini Vegan Thickshake

This week I discovered the most revolutionary food secret that a good friend of mine shared with me, and I think it's going to change my life (and probably yours) forever! Unfortunately for myself, I dislike bananas in every way, shape and form but they make up the base of about 99% of smoothie recipes going around these days. As a kid, my absolute favourite thing was a milo milkshake made with icecream (so naughty) and in recent years when I started experimenting making a healthy version of this, I thought all my dreams had come true.

No matter how many flavours you try to add to mask that banana flavour, I just couldn't stomach it so I would use nuts (almond meal, cashews or macadamias) as the creamy base for my smoothies. Of course, you need to watch how many nuts you consume daily which became a concern for me so I started omitting them; until now!

Have you ever had zucchini in a chocolate smoothie? Well let me tell you, you need to get onto that asap! When my friend shared a smoothie recipe with me that subbed banana for frozen zucchini I thought, wow that is absolute genius I'm going to give that a try. Well, it did not disappoint. This sneaky green vegetable made the shake thick, smooth and creamy, and best of all, it's low in sugar!

That was it, my morning smoothies just got taken to a whole new level. Here is my version of the recipe adapted from my good friend at Farm Life Flourish who created the Blueberry Cacao + Tahini Protein Thickshake.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup coconut milk (or almond milk)
  • 1 medium zucchini, washed + frozen
  • 1 tablespoon pea protein powder
  • 2 tablespoons cacao powder
  • 2 tablespoons rice malt syrup (or preferred sweetener)
  • 1 tablespoon tahini
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds
  • 1 teaspoon peanut butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla powder or extract
  • 1/2 cup brewed kkao Co. Cacao Tea
  • Optional: add blueberries, strawberries or raspberries

Method

  1. Place all ingredients in a high powered blended and blend until smooth and creamy.
  2. Pour into a glass and serve immediately.

Note: Mine is topped with our Cacao Coconut Buckini Crunch which I turned into "Not-Milo" by blitzing it in a food processor to a fine crumb.
